How to make Alcoholic Eggnog: Eggnog recipe and tips

ALCOHOLIC EGGNOG RECIPE
Eggnog is a popular drink which is usually associated with winter celebrations such as Christmas and New Year. Modern eggnog typically consists of milk and eggs.

As for how eggnog ultimately came by its name... that is a subject for debate. According to some sources, "nog" is a shortened form of the word "noggin," which was an ancient name for a small wooden cup - hence, "eggs in a small cup." Another source claims that "nog" is derived from an Old English word in the East Anglian dialect meaning "strong beer or ale." Yet another source suggests that "eggnog" is a slurred abbreviation of "egg-n-grog," "grog" being a colonial American word for rum. In England, it is also called "egg flip."

Below is a recipe for eggnog with alcohol which is sure to put you in a festive mood.

Eggnog Ingredients
- 1/3 c. rum
- 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
- 2 c. whole milks
- 3/4 c. sugars
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1/3 c. bourbons
- 6 egg yolks
- 1/2 c. half-and-half

Step 1
Heat the milk in a nonreactive saucepan over low heat, until it steams
Step 2
While the milk heats, beat the egg yolks, sugar, vanilla and nutmeg together very well
Step 3
When the milk is steaming and hot, turn the heat off
Step 4
Slowly ladle one scoop of milk into the eggs, whisking the eggs vigorously
Step 5
Place the whisk in the saucepan with the rest of the milk, whisk vigorously, and slowly pour the egg/milk mixture into the saucepan, whisking continuously
Step 6
Turn the heat on low and stir the mixture constantly with a wooden spoon or a heatproof flexible spatula (preferred). Stir it thoroughly so the portion on the bottom of the saucepan doesn't overcook
Step 7
Stop stirring when the mixture coats the spoon or spatula. Test by dragging your finger across the spoon or spatula; if your finger leaves a clear path through the eggnog and the mixture doesn't run, it's ready. (This might take as long as 20 minutes. Keep the heat low and don't rush it, or you might scramble the eggs.)
Step 8
Pour into a mixing bowl and add the half-and-half, rum and bourbon. Stir together and chill thoroughly
Step 9
Serve when chilled and decorate with a little grated nutmeg

There you have it, the perfect festive drink with a little bit of bite!
